Content Delivery in Malaysia

Internet Penetration in a Growing Economy

Online content is reaching more people every day in Malaysia. Currently, the country has over 21 million Internet users with 68.6% penetration. The growth of Internet usage, online shopping and the adoption of new technologies by the general population are influencing the overall development of e-commerce. Additionally, government initiatives for the development of network infrastructure have shown a positive results throughout the region.

Internet Coverage vs Internet Speed in Malaysia

Internet Coverage in Malaysia

One of the main challenges for Internet Content Providers (ICPs) delivering their content in Malaysia is network infrastructure. This can result in low Internet penetration. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) aims to improve Internet access in order to bridge the digital divide between different regions. As part of the National Broadband Initiative (NBI), the High Speed Broadband project (HSBB) is underway to expand high-speed Internet availability and increase broadband penetration rates.

Internet Speed in Malaysia

When it comes to Internet speed, Malaysia has been listed among the slowest countries in the world. According to a 2012 report from Google, Malaysia was in the bottom ten for webpage load time on desktop computers (14.3 seconds) and mobile devices (12.7 seconds). The average speed recorded in Q1 2016 was 6.4 Mbps, with the highest peak connection speed of 46.3Mbps. However, the Sub-Urban Broadband Project (SUBB) by the NBI aims to upgrade copper lines over the next 10 years to deliver broadband at speeds of up to 20Mbps, or up to 100Mbps in areas where fiber is available.
